Are There Benefits to the Anti-Christmas Movement?

by | Dec 15, 2022 | Other

For all who are upset at stores and buses no longer playing Christmas music, or parks no longer showing nativity scenes, something to keep in the back of your mind: The early church had none of those things.

They met in the home of other believers and sang and prayed and studied Scripture and celebrated Communion. After Constantine made Christianity legal several centuries later, that’s when those sorts of things started becoming public display. And individual faith suffered.

When Christianity moved from truly celebrating Christ in community to simply displaying Christ and calling that celebration in community, there was a profound, lessening shift in the church.

It is a beautiful thing when a whole village or town can gather together to celebrate faith. The camaraderie and feeling is one of unity, which is rare and to be cherished when it occurs. But let’s be honest, it’s been a long time since that’s happened here in America.

What we have now instead are simply religious displays within an otherwise secular community. And that is a very different thing. And while my heart personally misses those things of celebration, I have to wonder if maybe not just our nation but our faith is better off for it.
